Mike Winkelmann, a Charleston based graphic artist better known as Beeple, has been posting new works of digital art online every day for the last 13 years but only last week became a household name, when the culmination of his project, Everydays: The First 5000 Days, made history as the first digital work to be offered at auction as a Non-fungible token (a digital item with verified ownership) at Christie’s.
Known for his irreverent and surreal take on current events, Winklemann, who’s previous work as a graphic designer saw him create concert graphics for Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj, has been compared to the likes of Banksy and Andy Warhol, with the recent sale of his work, which fetched over $69m, causing debate about the future of art and digital content.
