Rising Stars: Rhea Dillon

11 07 2019

Rhea Dillon, a London based filmmaker, photographer and visual artist, uses her lens to explore youth culture, documenting experiences to ‘amplify blackness’.

Dillon’s 2018 film, Process, which premiered on Nowness, examined views surrounding the maintenance of afro hair, on which she commented ‘This crown I hold on my head is heavy laden with politics and societal pressures’. She’s also released a photo series entitled Sistahs with which she explored the friendship created between a group of black women in Paris, and a short film, Black Angel, made with LA based gender nonconforming brand No Sesso, which questioned the limit of innocence given to young black people in today’s society. Making a rare appearance in front of the camera, the 23 year old has walked for Portuguese womenswear brand Marques’ Almeida three times. This year, she showcased her final Central Saint Martin’s degree piece, The Name I Call Myself, with a multi-sensory installation on London’s Bateman Row, held in collaboration with perfume brand Byredo, examining what it means to identify as LGBTQ+ within the black British community.
