Lukas Dhont, 26, created one of the standout films of this year's Cannes Film Festival with Girl, a sensitive portrayal of a transgender teenage girl's quest to become a professional ballerina.

The Belgian director's debut feature length project was based on the true story of a young trans ballerina, and after wowing critics at its first showing – with Variety branding it a 'stunning debut' – the drama went on to win three top prizes at Cannes including the Queer Palm d'Or, the Caméra d'Or prize and a top acting award in the Un Certain Regard category for its star, Victor Polster.
