Kevin McCloud and Pat Cash have teamed up with Bristol City Council to support the Australian One Tree Per Child programme, founded by The Estate Of Dame Olivia Newton-John and environmentalist Jon Dee.
The initiative aims to plant 36,000 trees to mark Bristol status as European Green Capital 2015, and has also announced tree-planting schemes and projects for Africa with charities CHASE Africa and TREE AID. McCloud commented 'It's also particularly exciting that One Tree Per Child is now starting to roll out in African countries such as Ghana, Kenya and Mali. In these countries, trees play a vital role in society, providing food, fuel and shelter and establishing microclimates for growing other crops'.
