As new filmmakers emerge from eastern and central Europe, in part down to the changing socio-political landscape, Laszlo Nemes is one of the talents finding 'new openness in confronting historical trauma'.

The Hungarian-born film director and screenwriter saw his debut feature film Son of Saul win the Grand Prix at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, taking a big leap by opting to portray the Holocaust in a new language - Hungarian. Educating himself in Paris and New York, Nemes undertook a scholarship program with the Cinéfondation in September 2011, honing his craft. While details of his next project are being kept under wraps, it's thought he'll be following up Son of Saul with a thriller set in Budapest in 1910, expected to be backed by the Hungarian Film Fund.
