On Our Radar: Valeria Bruni Tedeschi

16 05 2013

The only female director to have a film In Competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Bruni Tedeschi is making her debut there as a director.

The sister of France's former first lady Carla Bruni, she has attended in the past as an actress, even securing a role in this year's Jury President Steven Spielberg's 2005 drama Munich. Her third foray into directing, A Castle In Italy tells the story of a family forced to sell their Italian home, and said to be semi-autobiographical, is certain to attract attention from those wanting an insight into her and her sister's upbringing. Described as Woody Allen-esque, and demonstrative of her unique sense of humour, a Palme d'Or would certainly help cement her transition from actor to respected director.
